A St. Jean de La Lande Chaplet, North American Martyr of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits)

A St. Jean de La Lande Chaplet, Jesuit Martyr of North America

Three Our Fathers, three Hail Marys, and three Glorias in worship of our Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit; the Trinity for whom Saint Jean de La Lande willingly died as a lay missioner with the Jesuits that the aboriginal peoples of North America might come to know our Saviour Jesus Christ and live forever in Him.

St. Jean de La Lande was a donné.  "The  donnés were exemplary Christian men who voluntarily bound themselves by contract to serve the missions for life in whatever capacity and place the Jesuit superior might assign them.  They rendered invaluable service to the Jesuit priests and brothers, and soon became coadjutor brothers."*
The Jesuit Relations from the missions in Canada state:
"One must not forget the young Frenchmen who was slain with Father [Isaac Jogues]. That good youth, called Jean de La Lande, – a native of the City of Dieppe, as has been said, – seeing the dangers in which he was involving himself in so perilous a journey, protested at his departure that the desire of serving God was leading him into a country where he surely expected to meet death. This frame of mind has enabled him to pass into a life which no longer fears either the rage of those Barbarians, or the fury of the Demons, or the pangs of death."

- JR (Thwaites), XXXI, 122 (the one passage in the Relations concerning Jean de La Lande).
